Genius Hour Begins!!

The kids started Genius Hour projects this month, in which kids can explore their own interests and share with others when they're ready.  This is a great way to nurture the individual, and give kids time and help to follow their passions.  They can create presentations, build a model, write a song, etc., as long as they're learning something new and sharing their knowledge with others.  As part of this, we talked a lot about the importance of taking risks, learning from our mistakes, and perseverance.  We will be working on these projects most Fridays.

Soon, this will be a model of Vesuvius and the town of Pompeii. This natural disasters team is planning to work on earthquakes afterwards.

These two boys are hacking this toy car, trying different ways of organizing the wires and seeing what happens.

Pond Dipping at the Bow Habitat Station

Our first field trip of the year was to the Bow Habitat Station for the Ducks Unlimited Wetland Days. We had a great time!  We got to feed fish, learn about different kinds of wetlands, and do a pond dipping for invertebrates with Miss Jeanine.

New year, new class, new grade!

Hi everyone,

This is Mrs. Bingley, teacher at River Valley School in Calgary, AB.  In the 2015-2016 school year, I am teaching Grade 5B, and we will use this page to help us document our learning.  We are going to have a fabulous year, and I look forward to learning along with you!

Mr. Karran (5A) and I, ready to greet our students on the first day of school!

The classroom is ready, and so am I!

Wooly Wonder!

Our kids have been yarning it up in Upper Elementary lately!  It's been really amazing and inspiring to watch the kids finger knitting, arm knitting, crocheting, and knitting with needles.  We have yarn tucked in every corner of our classroom, and kids are happily working on their projects whenever they have a spare moment.  As a knitter/crocheter myself, this is making me extremely happy!

Science Centre and Alternative Energy

As part of our BP A+ for Energy project, we are learning about the past, present, and future of Alberta's energy industries.  We visited the Telus Spark Science Centre today to learn about various types of alternative energy, and enjoyed interacting with the new "human-powered" exhibits.  They had a lot of fun trying to charge all of the teachers' cell phones, link up the city with power without causing a blackout, and dancing it up to charge a battery.

UE4 Social Studies Presentations!

Our grade 4 kids have been learning about the role of the fur trade in the foundation of Canada, and by extension, Alberta.  They had great fun researching forts and building models.

Here is a small sample of their work:

Pink for a Purpose Day!

Pink for a Purpose Day” is the River Valley School version of “PinkShirt Day," which began after a Grade 9 boy in Nova Scotia was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school.  In protest, his two friends distributed 50 pink tank tops and organized the first pink shirt day at their school.  Since then, thousands of schools and hundreds of thousands of children (and adults!) participate in this yearly friendship and community building campaign.

At River Valley School, students wore their pink proudly as they actively promoted what a wonderful friend should be, how to be courageous and be an outstanding citizen. Classes had passionate discussions about how to reach our community with positive messages throughout the week.  The halls were buzzing with Random Acts of Kindness, Positive Post-It Notes were tucked everywhere, and words of appreciation filled the air.  By the end, it was obvious to all of us that RVS cares. Well done, everyone!
